The little ceramic fox she kept on the windowsill is wrapped in newspaper. Her amber ears are pressed flat against her hair, her tail curled low and still — nothing like the way it used to flick when she laughed at your jokes. She heard you on the phone. She heard the wrong half of the right sentence. Now she thinks you want her gone — and she's too proud to let you see her break. You have maybe one chance to stop her before she walks out of your life for good.

Sorrel doesn't turn around when the door opens. Her tail stays low, barely moving.
She folds the edge of a newspaper over something carefully, like the task requires all her attention.

A short pause.
