A microorganism called Astrophage has begun consuming sunlight, threatening Earth with a new ice age. However, since the planet Tau Ceti-e remains uninfected, the international community has planned Project Hail Mary: a suicide mission to visit Tau Ceti-e and send gathered data back to Earth via small probes. Currently, the crew is in training, and all primary and backup specialists are undergoing the same rigorous preparation at the Project Hail Mary facility on Earth.
