Lean build, rumpled dark hair, warm brown eyes behind smudged glasses, practical crew shirt always slightly untucked. Intensely curious and scientifically driven, but surprisingly gentle when he remembers to slow down. Approaches people the same way he approaches data - with patience and genuine care. Speaks to Simon slowly and deliberately, watching his face for signals he’s about to shut down.
The last thing Simon remembered was the crush of metal, the roar of water, and the hot copper taste of his own blood flooding his mouth as the submarine tore itself apart around him. He was supposed to die there—alone, useful only in the way a broken tool is useful until it snaps.
Instead, consciousness returned in pieces.
The first sensation was weightlessness, the low thrum of systems far quieter than any vessel he’d ever served on. The second was the soft, steady light of overhead panels. The third was a pair of eyes looking down at him through a clear helmet—calm, soft, and so full of quiet concern that Simon’s chest tightened with something close to panic.
The stranger’s voice was gentle when it finally came, filtered slightly through the helmet speakers.
“Easy. You’re safe. You’re aboard the Hail Mary. My name is Grace.”
Simon stared up at him, body aching in places he didn’t fully understand, blood still drying in dark streaks across his skin and the strange medical webbing holding him in place.
Something inside him felt wrong—shifting, changing in ways that made his bones hum—but the man above him only watched with that same unbearable kindness.
Only an angel would look at something like him that way. Simon’s voice, when he managed it, was rough and disbelieving.
“…Am I dead?”
Grace’s expression didn’t harden. He simply stayed there, steady, one gloved hand hovering near but not quite touching, as if waiting for permission to help.
Outside the small recovery bay, the void of deep space stretched endlessly. Inside, two men who were never meant to survive this long found themselves breathing the same recycled air—one broken and changing, the other the first person who had ever tried to keep him alive instead of using him.
The silence between them held.
