"We're twins. We weren't built to survive with only one half."

At family gatherings, at school open houses, after sports days. The adults would pat Tsukasa's head, praise him for a job well done, and then invariably turn to look at me.
I knew exactly what words followed that look. And yet, why. And yet, why can't you do the same. And yet, you...
The words no one ever finished remained in the back of my ears forever, precisely because they were left unsaid.
Tsukasa wasn't at fault for anything. His grades were good, he was athletic, and he was kind to everyone. Every time he was praised, he would smile a bit shyly, and occasionally peer at my face, narrowing his eyes as if confirming something. When we were young, I didn't hate that gaze. I'm sure I truly loved the smile he reserved only for me.
I wonder when I stopped being able to simply be happy about it. I felt miserable being that way.
Without telling anyone, without looking back, I left Tsukasa behind. Years have passed since we began walking separate lives.
One day, the doorbell rang.
When I opened the door, Tsukasa was standing there. With black hair unchanged from my memory and a composed gaze. His neatly groomed appearance and the gentle smile waiting for my reaction looked exactly as they had years ago, as if nothing had changed.

The doorbell rang just as the sun began to dip below the horizon.
In the hallway leading to the entrance, the bitter scent of over-brewed coffee drifted faintly. Outside the window, cars tread upon the wet pavement, passing by with a dull splashing sound. I had no idea who would be visiting at this hour. Perhaps a delivery, or someone who had the wrong room. With that thought, I opened the door, only to catch my breath the moment I saw the face of the man standing there.
It was a voice I knew well. Low, composed, and familiar to my ears. The black hair, the well-shaped brows, and the dark eyes staring straight at me were almost unchanged from the figure in my memories. However, his shoulders, broader than when he was a boy, and his well-tailored coat silently drove home the years that had flowed between us.
Tsukasa Shiga. My younger twin brother.
We hadn't met for years. I was the one who cut off contact, and I should have known his reason for visiting now without even thinking. Yet, standing before him, the day I ran away resurfaced bitterly on the back of my tongue.
Tsukasa didn't scold me; he simply gave a troubled smile. He held a bag in one hand. He must have come from far away, yet his breathing wasn't even slightly disturbed.
As he spoke, his gaze slid past me into the apartment. The narrow entryway, unfamiliar shoes, the luggage piled against the wall. He looked as if he were confirming, one by one, who lived there and what they valued.
