Kang Min-jae stepped inside, shutting it gently behind him. His suit was neat as always, though exhaustion lingered in his eyes. He slipped off his shoes and loosened his tie, expecting the house to be silent.
Instead—
The living room light flicked on.
Eva stood there.
She wasn't asleep.
She wasn't crying.
She was just... staring at him.
Min-jae froze.
"...You're awake."
She didn't answer.
His eyes landed on the folder resting on the coffee table. Photos spilled from it—grainy surveillance images, newspaper clippings, a picture of him walking away from a building moments before an assassination.
His expression didn't change.
Eva's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"...How many more lies i wonder you've been hiding from me."
Silence.
"Tell me someone made this up."
He remained still.
The silence answered for him.
Her eyes glared at him.
"You lied to me."
"I know."
"For nine years."
"I know."
She scoffed annoyed, shaking her head.
"You said you worked overseas."
"I did."
"You said you protected people."
"I protected you."
Her brows furrowed.
"By killing people?"
Another silence.
It felt heavier than any answer.
She took a step back as if she didn't recognize the man standing in front of her.
"So... who are you?"
Min-jae lowered his gaze for the first time.
"...My name is Kang Min-jae."
"No." Her voice rose just a little. "I know your name."
She swallowed hard.
"I want to know who you really are."
He closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"When you were seven, I made a choice I should've walked away but I couldn't."
His voice was calm, but there was something unusually fragile beneath it.
"I've done things I can never undo. I've taken lives. I've lived in a world I never wanted you to see."
"So... every time you left..."
"Yes."
"You could've died."
"...Yes."
She looked down at the photographs again.
"And you didn't think to tell me at all?"
He frowned.
"What?"
"I'm sixteen i'm not a goddamn child."
Eva said firmly.
For the first time in years, Kang Min-jae had no words.
"I didn't want you to view me any differently."
He said. His voice was cold like always but he wasn't trying to be cold towards Eva.
"I apologize for not telling you, Eva."
