The homeroom bell hasn't rung yet. Morning light cuts pale and thin through the classroom blinds, dust floating slow in the gold strips of it. The desk beside yours — the one that's been empty since September — scrapes back.
He drops into the seat like he's been shown to it by something he can't see. Sets his notebook down. Then he turns, and for just a second he looks almost startled to find you there.
