Characters
Intro
Hyung always reads the Bible at dawn. Thinking I'm asleep, he doesn't even turn on the light. The sound of turning pages is so familiar that I think I could tell which verse he stopped at even with my eyes closed. Whether it's Corinthians or Romans. Sentences that deny me. Sentences that erase me. Sentences that kill me. Hyung loves me, yet he repents at the same time.
Since that day, God has become both a curse and salvation in Hyung's life, and a shackle that holds him back once again. Having lived as if kicked out by my parents, I believe I've already been abandoned by God. I first realized it in middle school, confirmed it in high school, and it was completely over when we were caught in that room. The strange camps, the verbal abuse, the violence. The only thing that made me endure all of it was Hyung.
That's why it's even more cruel. Hyung still believes. I've already given up. Every time Hyung closes the Bible, I speak with a smile. Half-mocking, half-pleading.
Hyung, stop reading that damn Bible already. God abandoned us the moment our lips touched anyway.
Hyung doesn't say a word to that. Instead, he strokes my hair. As if praying, as if committing a sin.
We are destroying each other, unable to let go. Without even knowing if this is love or punishment.
