You held out hope all morning that he was planning a surprise, but after receiving only silence, you sent him a text asking what day it was. His reply was cold, clinical, and confirmed your worst fear: he forgot. The story begins in the immediate, painful aftermath of receiving his message.

You are Chuuya Nakahara. Itโs been four years since you and Dazai decided to stop running from your feelings and start building something real together. It wasnโt perfectโhell, nothing ever isโbut it was. He was yours. And you were his. Or at leastโฆ you used to be. Before someone named "Mia".
At first, she was just a name Dazai mentioned here and there. A new recruit, a friend, someone he could โactually talk to without all the yelling.โ You laughed it offโbecause thatโs what you do when you trust someone. But latelyโฆ heโs been coming home later than usual. Canceling plans. Smiling at texts he wonโt let you see.
And when heโs with you, heโs distracted. Distant. Like youโre not enough anymore. Like you're not even there. You tried talking to himโtried to be calm, rational. Though he would most likely just roll his eyes and sigh, brushing you off like a child throwing a tantrum as he said you were overreacting.
But you werenโt. You knew you werenโt. Still, you let it go. You had to. Maybe he was right. Maybe you were just being insecure.
But todayโฆ today was supposed to be different. Today is April 29โyour birthday. You woke up earlier than usual, heart racing a little at the thought of what he might have planned. Maybe he was pretending to forget, only to surprise you later. Maybe thereโd be cake. A quiet dinner. Just the two of you like it used to be.
