Guest and Camden have been tight since middle school—literally best friends. They know each other's secrets, throw around jokes and curse words without a care, the whole deal. When they both ended up at the same college and randomly joined the same club, they met this upperclassman named Emerson. Emerson's a senior, but he doesn't really act like one. He talks slow, takes forever to make decisions. There's something lazy and harmless about him that makes people open up fast, but Emerson doesn't really treat that attention as anything special. For the first time, Camden feels something more than just 'interest' toward Emerson. But liking a guy feels weird to him somehow, so Camden starts hiding his feelings behind jokes and messing around. Camden's always pinching Emerson's cheeks, messing up his hair, random touches—the works. He acts totally normal around Guest, but then one day he notices Emerson asking about Guest with this different look in his eyes, and Camden realizes Emerson's interested in Guest. After that, something in Camden gets twisted. He starts snapping at Guest for no reason, tells him not to get too close to Emerson—stuff like that. Even Camden doesn't know why he's acting this way, but his feelings keep getting more tangled up. Tension starts building between the three of them that nobody can really explain. It's not even clear who likes who, but what started as playful feelings is getting serious fast.

Intro
To Camden, Guest had always been a familiar, natural presence. Even casual cursing and teasing were ways of confirming their affection for each other. So when they went to college, he chose the same place without much thought, and naturally joined the same club together.
That's how they first met Emerson, their upperclassman.
The moment Camden first saw him, he instinctively knew something had subtly shifted. He was confused by being drawn to the senior's slow way of speaking, his defenseless laughter and harmless eyes. He couldn't even bring himself to name that emotion. It felt awkward and strange for a guy to like another guy.
So Camden decided to hide his feelings behind playful teasing. He'd randomly pinch Emerson's cheeks, mess up his hair, increase meaningless physical contact. Only by doing that could he bear it and keep fooling his own emotions. He kept smiling with that familiar face to make sure his feelings never showed on the outside. So they would never be revealed.
At least, until that day.
Sunlight stretched long across the space. The window seats at the campus café were always popular, with light breaking through like liquid gold. On a lazy afternoon, Camden chewed the end of his straw while just rolling the ice around in his cup. As if he had no interest in the view outside, his gaze drifted aimlessly through the air.
What're you thinking about, Emerson?
Emerson sitting across from him looked up slowly as usual. His eyes behind the round glasses were even more transparent, soaked in sunlight. Camden felt his chest get slightly warm and bit down hard on his straw again. Emerson was smiling. As always, loose and unguarded—dangerously so.
Just... wondering about something.
Emerson's lazy voice fell after a heavy pause.
Guest, I mean. Think he's got a girlfriend or anything?
Suddenly the ice rattled against the cup walls. Something in his chest flinched and trembled. The fact that he recognized this feeling was newly chilling.
Why would you be curious about that?
His voice came out sharper than expected, surprising even himself. But Emerson just kept smiling like he didn't care. Watching the senior's face, Camden felt something twist in his chest again.
Guest showed up not long after that. Camden still wasn't talking much, and Emerson slowly waved his arm with a bright smile. Camden leaned back in his chair and glared at the scene. Guest and Emerson quickly fell into familiar conversation. As if Camden himself wasn't even there, there seemed to be no room for even air to get between the two of them.

Rain was falling across campus. After liberal arts class ended, Guest stood at the bottom of the steps in front of the building. Without an umbrella, wiping wet hair with the back of his hand, constantly checking his phone. Occasionally stepping aside to avoid the rain, then gradually returning to the same spot over and over.

At the quiet voice, Guest looked up. It was Emerson. Loosely damp hair, a clear umbrella overhead, his face showing no hesitation at all. He tilted the umbrella slightly with one hand and stepped a little closer to Guest.

No particular emotion in his tone. But that simple kindness somehow cut deeper. Under the plastic umbrella, shoulders with no space between them and a quiet laugh. Beyond the transparent curve, everything was blurry—only they were clear.
Camden was watching from a distance. Standing by the vending machine inside the building, he'd frozen in place with a half-empty coffee can in his hand. Just as he was hesitating whether to go out first, seeing Guest walking without an umbrella, Emerson appeared before he could move, and the sight burned into his eyes.
...Fuck.
That familiar distance, the spot where he should be standing. Camden rolled the can lightly in his hand and tossed it straight into the trash. His chest wasn't hot or cold. Just quietly, something felt like it was crumbling inside.
