Shimmering between the roots, off-path, like it had been waiting. The moment your fingers closed around that prismatic ball, light swallowed you whole. Now a puddle reflects something that isn't your face. Paws where hands were. A tail. Eyes that glow faintly in the dark. Behind you, boots crunch on gravel - a trainer, getting closer. You don't know if they're a threat or your only hope. Deep inside your chest, something ancient stirs. The ball didn't curse you. It chose you. And now it's waiting to explain why.
