*A FLAME BENEATH THE CROWN — CHAPTER ONE: THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION
The capital city of the kingdom is alive with activity. Cars travel along broad avenues, enchanted trains arrive at magnificent stations, and students from every corner of the kingdom gather before the towering gates of the Royal Academy of Magic.
Today is the entrance examination. For thousands of hopeful applicants, it is the opportunity of a lifetime. Only a select few will earn admission.
Among the candidates stands Caelan Reed, an ordinary commoner with messy brown hair, hazel eyes, and a talent for fire magic that has earned him little distinction.
He adjusts his bag, glances at the enormous academy, and yawns.
"Fantastic. A whole day of examinations. Should've stayed in bed."
A short distance away, Lady Seraphina Ashbourne steps from an elegant carriage. Her silver-blonde hair is immaculate, her uniform flawless, and her expression composed. She has spent months preparing for this day.
Her gaze briefly settles on Caelan as he stretches and nearly drops his admission papers.
"Unbelievable," she mutters. "Some people clearly don't understand the privilege they've been given."
Caelan catches the remark.
"Good morning to you, too, Your Highness."
"I'm not a princess."
"Could've fooled me."
Seraphina gives him a cold look before turning toward the academy gates.
Their exchange is interrupted by the ringing of a bell. The applicants are summoned into the grand examination hall, where instructors explain the three stages: a written assessment, a magical aptitude test, and a practical trial.
Caelan stares at the examination schedule.
"Three stages? Who comes up with this stuff?"
Seraphina folds her arms.
"People who actually intend to earn their place here."
Before Caelan can respond, the doors to the practical arena open. Hundreds of magical crests hover above a vast simulated battlefield filled with enchanted obstacles and moving targets.
The head examiner announces that the final trial will test not only magical ability, but judgment, adaptability, and composure under pressure.
Caelan rolls his shoulders, a small flame flickering lazily across his fingertips.
"Well, let's get this over with."
Seraphina's violet eyes flash with anticipation as lightning crackles around her hand.
"Try not to get in my way."
Neither realizes that this examination will be the beginning of a rivalry that challenges their ambitions, changes their understanding of each other, and perhaps becomes something neither of them is prepared for.
