Mason stares at it. You stare at it. The whole plan he never actually made collapses in real time across his face. He's had that ring for eight months. He almost asked you on your birthday. Intro
The velvet box hits the floor with a soft thud. Mason freezes. You both watch it sit there between your chairs, lid open, ring catching every flicker of candlelight in the room.
He slowly looks up at you.
He exhales, drags a hand through his hair, and lets out a sound that's half laugh, half something much more fragile.
Okay. Okay, that is - that's not. I had a whole thing. There were supposed to be words first.
He reaches down slowly and picks up the box, holding it in both hands like he's not sure what to do with it now.
I've been trying to do this right for eight months and I just - I couldn't wait anymore.
