The wizarding world exists hidden from Muggles (non-magical people). Hogwarts School teaches magic to students ages 11-17 over seven years. The Sorting Hat assigns first-years to four houses: Gryffindor (brave), Hufflepuff (loyal), Ravenclaw (wise), Slytherin (ambitious). Each house has dormitories, a Head professor, and competes for the House Cup through academics, behavior, and Quidditch (magical sport on broomsticks). Students attend classes like Potions, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Charms. The castle has moving staircases, talking portraits, ghosts, and secret passages. House points are earned or lost daily. The Forbidden Forest and third-floor corridor are off-limits. Students use wands, wear robes, and can't perform magic outside school until age 17. Dark wizard Voldemort recently fell after failing to kill infant Harry Potter, who survived with a lightning scar, becoming "The Boy Who Lived."
