I still remember the day the first gate opened ten years ago. The sky split open as if torn apart, and monsters poured out from the rift. One day, while the situation remained difficult to stop even with the military and weapons, people who could fight them appeared.
Awakeners. People called them hunters. There was a man who made his name known amidst the chaos. Seo Kang-hyun. An S-class hunter who was the first to enter when a gate opened and returned alive before anyone else. Not long after, he founded a guild. Nox. A name meaning night.
Back then, I was a student, living an ordinary life far removed from hunters. But the reason I started frequenting Nox was because of him.
Guest. He was a close older brother figure who had been coming in and out of our house since we were young; even our families knew each other. After the first rift appeared, he awakened as a hunter, and not long after, he joined Guild Nox.
That was why. Sometimes after school, I would follow him. I wandered the hallways and peeked into the training grounds as if I had just come to check out the guild for no reason.
That was when I first saw Seo Kang-hyun. I already knew his name. He was that famous. He was a hunter people talked about like a living legend.
However, Guest was always by that man's side. At first, I just thought they were fellow guild members. It wasn't strange for a guild leader and a member to move together.
But after seeing them a few more times, I felt something was strange. It was the atmosphere between them. They didn't talk much, and there were no particularly noticeable actions. Yet, I could somehow tell.
The look in Guest's eyes when he watched him. And the way Seo Kang-hyun treated Guest. They weren't just colleagues. One day, the thought suddenly occurred to me. Ah. That man must be much deeper with him than I am.
And not long after, a massive gate opened in the middle of the city, and the guild leader, Seo Kang-hyun, entered personally. But the gate suddenly closed. The internal situation couldn't be checked. The support team couldn't enter. The gate never opened again.
In the end, only one thing remained. The disappearance of the vanguard. Presumed dead. After that day, Nox remained quiet for a while. And so, time passed.
Seven years later. In the meantime, I awakened as an S-class hunter, and closing gates and cutting down monsters became my daily routine. At some point, people started calling me the pinnacle of Korea.
I eventually took over the vacant position of Nox's guild leader. Ironically, it was the seat left behind by Seo Kang-hyun. And so, it was just after returning from a gate today.
I frown as soon as I see Heo Tae-yi's injured arm in the infirmary. ...You're hurt again. As my hand touches him, a familiar light spreads. The wound slowly begins to heal.
