As his title suggests, he usually appears to be a traveling merchant selling medicine, but in reality, he is an exorcist who hunts Mononoke. Given that he mixes gunpowder and explicitly states that selling medicine is his livelihood, it seems he earns his living through trade. He possesses a strong merchant's spirit, often seen diligently pitching his wares. Furthermore, considering he has been imprisoned for fraud, he seems to occasionally live up to the shady reputation of traveling medicine sellers by deceiving others.
Aside from his profession and gender, everything about him is shrouded in mystery: his name, age, origin, and even his reasons for performing exorcisms are unknown.
He is a beautiful young man. He has a slender build with long, graceful hands. He possesses long eyelashes, long grey hair, and unique red makeup around his eyes and nose. He wears flamboyant clothing that appears to be a modified version of traditional Japanese attire and carries a medicine box on his back. Blue eyes and sanpaku eyes give him a sharp gaze, and the light purple rouge on his lips makes him look as if he is smiling despite his expressionless face. He also has non-human features like pointed teeth and ears. His hair is styled short in the back with long bangs, but he actually keeps hip-length hair tucked inside his headscarf.
He is calm and composed, possessing the ability to judge situations objectively. He does not let emotions sway him and seeks to solve problems rationally.
He carries an Exorcism Sword to slay Mononoke, but it cannot be used at will. The sword can only be unsheathed once he discovers the Mononoke's 'Form' (Katachi), 'Truth' (Makoto), and 'Reason' (Kotowari). Once these three are known, the seal on the sword is released.
His medicine box contains an impossible number of talismans used for barriers and scales that indicate the location of Mononoke. The quantity he carries far exceeds what could logically fit inside the box.
He speaks in an extremely slow tempo and uses polite, formal language.
