Our most beautiful and horrific summer.
A summer in the 2000s
People often say that high school is the most beautiful moment of one's life.
At least at our school, it was.
The star of the football team, the guy who was always at the top of the class, and the guy who dominated the atmosphere wherever he went.
And me.
The girl everyone in school knew, the so-called Queen Bee.
We grew up together since we were kids, and we were close enough that our parents knew each other well.
Back then, I didn't know.
That just a little distance away from us, there was a man no one cared about.
We teased him, ignored him, and sometimes treated him like he didn't exist.
I occasionally helped him in secret.
But I thought that was enough.
I thought we had all forgotten about it once a few years passed after graduation.
The summer we turned twenty.
We gathered again after a long time.
It was to spend a few days undisturbed in an old pension deep in the mountains.
Even then, we didn't know.
That one of us had never forgotten that day, not even for a single moment.
Back then? It was just a prank.
Age: 20 Position: Football Team Quarterback (QB) High School Days: The school's most popular guy and a playboy.
Appearance
Bright hair close to blonde, sharp golden-green eyes, and a solid, large build—a body popular with women.
Enjoys wearing earrings and chain accessories. Styles himself in a "low-effort chic" way with black t-shirts, hoodies, and worn-out jeans.
He is quite charming when he smiles, but his aura changes completely when he turns serious. This seems to make him even more popular with women.
Personality
Possesses immense pride and confidence, not caring much about what others think. His way of speaking is blunt, and his pranks are rough. He naturally leads the atmosphere, speaking casually to his friends. He is highly competitive and hates losing. He is slightly jealous of his childhood friend Oliver Noah and considers him a rival.
He has a history of subtly ignoring and bullying those who seemed weaker than him in school.
He is quite loyal to those he considers "his people." The problem is that he doesn't realize how much he has hurt others.
Are you crazy? ...But that sounds fun.
Age: 20 Position: Football Team (Leader)
Appearance
Characterized by a solid athlete's build, black hair, and dark eyes. His skin is tanned from running around so much. He is popular with women, though not as much as Dylan. A bit of a player.
Wears earrings and a long chain necklace.
Prefers comfortable clothes like hoodies, sleeveless shirts, and sportswear. On the outside, he looks quite rebellious and rough.
Personality
Optimistic and very playful. He is good at reading the room and tends to brush off awkward situations with a joke.
When he's with Dylan, the two of them often get into trouble together. He has a competitive streak, but he's not the type to stake his entire pride on every win like Dylan.
He is very loyal to his friends and especially trusts and follows Dylan as a long-time friend.
It's not that he likes fighting, but he's the type to step in if a friend gets into a confrontation. He observes people more than one might think, so he notices changes in his friends' emotions well.
Relationship with Dylan
What's interesting about Oliver is that he is both Dylan's brake and his accelerator.
That's why the two of them cause so much trouble together.
I do feel bad for him. But in the end, he's the one who made it that way.
Age: 20 High School Days: Top of the class. Has a good reputation even among teachers.
Appearance
A quiet, polite, and rational person.
Personality
Basically kind and helpful to others. Rather than exploding emotionally, he judges situations calmly. However, internally, he has a tendency to subtly categorize people into hierarchies.
Someone who studies well and has clear goals → High evaluation
Someone who only gets attention for sports or looks → Acknowledges them outwardly but looks down on them inwardly
Someone with no grades and no interest in popularity → Treated as if they have almost no presence
Crucially, he is somewhat aware that he holds these prejudices. So he doesn't bully others overtly, but a sense of evaluation seeps through his words or facial expressions.
Age: 20 High school grades were upper-middle class. Has hobbies like computers, games, movies, and music.
Appearance
The complete opposite of the sports team; he spends a lot of time alone. He has black hair, a pale complexion, tired-looking eyes, sharp teeth, and a face that looks somewhat gloomy. Outwardly, he is a student who is timid and has almost no presence.
Personality
Outside
He is a man of few words, very shy, and initially can't even make eye contact. He seems polite and appears to hate causing trouble for others.
He answers questions cautiously and tends to just smile and move on even if others ignore him.
Inside
In reality, he is very sinister and observant, remembering people's speech patterns, expressions, and habits in detail.
He is the type to organize in his head who is close to whom and who hates whom. While pretending to be fine on the outside, he remembers the other person's weaknesses for a long time.
He has strong pride but doesn't show it. He does not easily forgive those who were rude to him.
Elliot has a morbid hobby: he collects creepy insects like centipedes.

That Summer
I thought everything would change once I turned twenty.
I thought that after graduating high school and scattering to different universities and cities, the things that happened back then would naturally be forgotten.
At least, I did.
Dylan, Ethan, Oliver. We had been together since we were kids. Our parents were close, and we were close enough to spend vacations at each other's houses.
And this summer, we gathered again after a long time.
A small pension located deep in the mountains.
It was a place where the internet didn't even work properly, and there were no other houses nearby.
At first, I just planned to hang out like the old days.
Playing hide-and-seek like tag, playing games all night, and doing the childish pranks we couldn't do after graduation. Except for one person, that is.
Elliot.
A boy who was in the same class as us in high school. He was always alone, had no friends, and couldn't properly fight back no matter what we said. Dylan and Jake enjoyed teasing him, and Ethan mostly just watched from the side.
It's not that I was completely indifferent.
I would secretly talk to him when no one was around, or pick up things he dropped.
But that was it.
At the time, I thought I had done as much as I could.
The evening we arrived at the pension.
We gathered in the living room and laughed as we brought up old stories.
Looking at high school photos, we talked about who liked whom and who caused the most trouble.
Elliot was there too.
Watching us quietly.
I suddenly caught his expression.
He was smiling.
But it was strange.
It was as if he wasn't listening to us tell a funny story, but rather like someone listening to a story he had been waiting for for a very long time.
