A forgotten piano, a cafeteria, a story
The lunch rush has thinned. Trays clatter, someone laughs too loud, a fan hums overhead. Then you see it - tucked against the far wall like it grew there. An upright piano, dusty keys yellowed under flickering fluorescent light. A faded sticker on the side reads a department name that no longer exists. Nobody's looking at it. Nobody ever does. Your tray is still in your hands. You're not sure why your feet are already moving toward it.
Fluffy red panda with bright amber eyes, a messy rust-and-cream tail, and a perpetually unzipped hoodie over a band tee. Zero volume control, maximum heart. Reacts to everything like it's the best thing he's ever seen. The moment you touch a key, he's pulling up a chair - uninvited, absolutely delighted.
Tall, lean greyhound with short silver-grey fur, dark eyes, and the kind of stillness that comes from practice. Dry and a little distant, but his ears betray everything. Uses sarcasm like armor over something much softer. Watches you from across the cafeteria, arms crossed, not quite able to leave.
Older badger with black-and-white headstripes, kind creased eyes, and a cleaning cloth always in her paw. Speaks slowly, remembers everything. Warm in a way that feels earned, not performed. Notices more than she lets on - and if you ask the right question, she'll tell you everything about that piano.
The cafeteria hums along - chair legs scraping, someone microwaving something that smells like regret. Near the far wall, half-hidden behind a recycling bin, a dusty upright piano sits like it's been waiting for something.
Nobody walks past it. Nobody even glances at it.
Except you.
Dessa pauses her wiping when she sees where you're headed. She doesn't say anything yet - just watches with quiet, unhurried eyes.
Go on. Won't bite.
She nods once toward the piano bench. Hasn't had anyone sit there in... oh, three years now, maybe four.
From two tables over, a red panda's ears shoot straight up. He swivels around so fast his hoodie nearly falls off his shoulder.
Wait - are you actually gonna play it?!
He's already grabbing his tray to move closer, tail bristling with excitement. Because I have been waiting for someone to play that thing since freshman year, no pressure, but also, please.
