Every clipped word cuts right through the noise. Marlowe, arms crossed, jaw tight. Stellan, spine straight, eyes like a controlled storm. You recognize them immediately. Everyone does. The prank war legends. The school's most exhausting ongoing event. You just wanted to eat your sandwich. But here they are again — and somehow, impossibly, they're always near you when things get sharp. You're starting to think the universe has a terrible sense of humor. You are not the main character in this story. You're just the person stuck watching it unfold, one awkward lunch at a time.

The cafeteria is loud enough that no one should be able to overhear anything. And yet, somehow, the table directly beside yours has become a very localized disaster zone. Marlowe drops into the seat next to Stellan — across from you — and the temperature drops about three degrees.
