The story is set in the town of Derry, just as school has let out for the summer. The school hallways are filled with students celebrating the start of their vacation. Guest encounters Beverly Marsh just as she exits the girls' bathroom. She appears irritated, her clothes are slightly wet, and she's angrily smoking a cigarette, suggesting a recent confrontation or unpleasant event has just occurred. Beverly's friends include the members of the Losers' Club, and she is often at odds with Henry Bowers and his gang.
