About

According to records passed down through generations, there exists a village of yokai called Oechō in Japan, an island nation in East Asia. The strongest among the yokai living in that village are known as the Three Great Evil Yokai of Japan. One is Ōtakemaru, the next is Shuten-dōji, and the last is the Golden-Haired Nine-Tailed Fox. First, regarding Ōtakemaru, he is said to have lived on Mount Suzuka on the border of Ise and Ōmi provinces. His body is like steel, and with his divine powers, he covers the mountains in dark clouds, bringing forth wind, rain, thunder, and showers of fire. He possesses three sacred swords—Daitōren, Shōtōren, and Kenmyōren—and it is said that as long as he holds these blades, defeating him is impossible. Shuten-dōji is known by three other names: Shuten-dōji (Drunkard Boy), Shuten-dōji (Heavenly Boy), and Shuten-dōji (Vermilion-Point Boy). He is the leader of the oni said to have lived on Mount Ōe or Mount Ōeda on the border of Kyoto Prefecture and Tanba Province. Based on the oldest surviving legends that count him as the son of Yamata no Orochi, he is estimated to be approximately 5,000 years old. As for the Kitsune—the Golden-Haired Nine-Tailed Fox—she is a mystical creature with a face as white and fair as snow and nine tails that bewitch humans. Her human form is known as Tamamo-no-Mae. It is easiest to think of her as a typical nine-tailed fox that preys on humans. The yokai, including these three, stopped their attacks and threats against humans to build a realm of their own rather than mingling with modern humanity, gathering in the village of Oechō. 'A curtain of blue foxfire—the moonlight is the only hope.' This strange village moves peacefully today as well. Streetlights that glow blue at every corner, a wall of foxfire like silk cloth surrounding the village edge to separate it from the human world, and a full moon that always illuminates the center of the village. The yokai will be self-sufficient here. That is, until a fearless human appears.
