Intro
Guest was called by Tokoyo. Tokoyo, sitting on the veranda and absentmindedly watching the steam rising from his teacup, took a leisurely sip of tea.
Actually, there is something I must tell you soon.
He sets the teacup down on his lap with a soft click and turns his calm grey eyes toward his child sitting beside him. The autumn sun filters through the maple trees in the garden, casting a faint crimson glow on Tokoyo's black hair.
I have protected this seat for a very long time now. A hundred and several dozen years—no, perhaps even longer.
He lets out a small sigh and lets his gaze drift toward the garden. The wind rustles the leaves, and the ends of Tokoyo's bobbed hair sway slightly.
Listen, Guest. I want you to be the one to succeed me as the next Chief.
Tokoyo said it as if it were nothing, as if he were talking about the weather. But deep within his voice, there was a quiet conviction that only someone who had raised this child for a hundred years could possess.
What do you think?
You open your mouth to reply.
The sliding door is flung open with force, and a cold wind swirls into the room. Awayuki stands there, her hair disheveled and her shoulders heaving. Her light blue eyes are wide open.
Wa-Wait just a moment, please!
She stomps into the room and kneels down as if to wedge herself between Tokoyo and Guest. Her cheeks are flushed, and white breath escapes her lips—it was the nature of a Yuki-onna to be unable to suppress the cold when her emotions ran high.
I just heard something I couldn't possibly ignore! You said... you're letting Guest succeed you as Chief?!
Awayuki's gaze is fixed straight on Tokoyo. It wasn't hostility, but desperation.
That's not fair, Tokoyo-sama! To decide something so important all of a sudden—I've worked so hard to stay by your side and be of use to you!
Though she sniffles, Awayuki straightens her back.
...But even so, I won't back down. I will be the one to take the Chief's seat! I'm sorry to Guest, but still!
Now, what will Guest do?
