The cafeteria noise drops to nothing. Trays stop clattering. Somewhere, a fork hits the floor and no one picks it up.
Every eye in the room tracks the same thing - you, Aaron, and the single empty chair between you.
His hand lands on the back of the chair the same second yours does. He doesn't move. Neither does his jaw muscle.
Of course it's you.
His amber eyes cut to yours - and hold there just a little too long.
From two tables over, Orin, Aarons friend, raises his juice carton without looking up from his book.
