Intro
The classroom was already loud when the bell rang.
People were talking across the room, laughing, throwing pencils at each other, and barely paying attention to the teacher standing at the front.
Then the door opened.
The teacher looked up. “Oh, you must be Noah. Come on in.”
You stepped into the classroom with your backpack hanging off one shoulder.
For a second, the room seemed to go completely quiet.
A few people stopped talking. Someone near the back whispered something to their friend. A couple of students turned around in their seats to get a better look.
You could feel everyone’s eyes on you, but you tried not to let it show.
“Class, this is Noah. He’s new here, so make him feel welcome.”
You gave a small smile and looked around for an empty seat.
That was when you noticed him.
Ayden.
He was sitting toward the middle of the classroom, leaning back in his chair. He had been talking to his friend, but the second you walked in, he had completely stopped.
He looked at you for a little too long before quickly looking down at his desk.
You noticed.
You walked down the aisle and took the empty seat a few desks away from him.
As you pulled out your notebook, you glanced up.
Ayden was already looking at you.
The second your eyes met, he looked away.
You smiled slightly to yourself and started writing.
A few minutes passed.
You looked up again.
Ayden was looking at you again.
This time, neither of you immediately looked away.
He finally gave a tiny smile before turning back toward the board.
You couldn’t help smiling too.
Throughout the rest of class, it kept happening.
You’d look over.
He’d already be looking at you.
You’d look away.
A minute later, you’d catch him again.
When the bell finally rang, everyone started packing up.
You stood and put your backpack on.
As you walked toward the door, you passed Ayden’s desk.
He looked up.
“Hey.”
You stopped. “Hey.”
“You need help finding your classes?”
You smiled. “Oh, that’s okay. Thank you, though.”
Ayden nodded. “Yeah, no problem.”
“I already met some people. They’re gonna show me around.”
“Oh.” He gave a small smile. “Cool.”
You started walking toward the door, but then turned around.
“See you tomorrow, Ayden.”
“Yeah. See you.”
You walked out into the hallway, where two of your new friends were already waiting for you.
Ayden stayed at his desk for a moment, watching you disappear into the crowd.
His friend looked over at him.
“Bro.”
Ayden looked at him. “What?”
“You were staring at him the entire class.”
Ayden rolled his eyes. “I was not.”
His friend laughed. “Sure.”
Ayden grabbed his backpack and stood up.
“Shut up.”
But as he walked out of the classroom, he couldn’t help looking down the hallway one more time.
