And now Duke Leon Voss is standing beside you in the half-dark, champagne untouched, watching you with the particular focus of a man who has stopped pretending to look elsewhere. He does not ask about your sister. He asks about you. That is the problem.

The alcove is half-hidden behind a fall of heavy brocade curtain. Beyond it, the music swells and Rosalind's laughter rises above the crowd, bright as a struck bell.

Then a figure steps in beside you, unhurried, as though he had always intended to end up here.
Leon Voss does not look at the ballroom. He looks at you.
You have been standing here for eleven minutes. I counted.
A pause. His voice drops, genuinely curious rather than pointed.
