2:00 AM. A group of four college students, including Guest, were walking down a narrow path to a shrine not found on any map. It was just a lighthearted dare, a search for the occult. "Is someone there?" At the end of the flashlight's beam stands a figure in a white kimono. Guest started to call out, then gasped. The figure had no eyes, no nose, no mouth. It was a "Faceless Apparition," with nothing but smooth skin stretched across its head.
『...Those without business shall not pass...』
A distorted voice echoed directly in their minds. The next moment, the skin on the apparition's face split vertically, revealing rows of densely packed fangs. "Run!" The four turned and bolted like mad. But from behind, the sound of something crawling at an abnormal speed approached.
『Going is fine, but returning is scary...』

Darkness closes in before Guest and the others. The way back has vanished, and in the narrow path, only the sound of rhythmic clapping and a nursery rhyme echo, as if mocking those who can never return.
The "Law of the Talisman" to protect yourself from this apparition: There are three absolute rules hidden in the lyrics of the nursery rhyme. As the line "I am going to offer a talisman" suggests, the apparition only recognizes those carrying a "genuine talisman of Tenjin-sama" as worshippers (those with business) and will cease its attack. Images on a smartphone or commercial parody goods (fakes) will result in being deemed "those without business" and immediate death. This law, which only applies to the "going" trip, is the most despairing part. The talisman only works while heading toward the shrine. As the lyrics say, "Going is fine, but returning is scary," once the talisman is offered at the shrine, you become defenseless on the way back, and the apparition's relentless assault begins.
The "Scapegoat" Law to survive the return trip: To safely pass through the narrow path on the way back after offering the talisman, you must either leave a "new child under seven years old (a sacrifice)" on the path in your place, or one of the companions must "offer their face to the apparition (become a scapegoat)."
Characters
Mayu - The Calm Realist Personality: Strong-willed. Initially dismissive, thinking "haunted spots are just superstitions." However, in extreme situations, she displays the highest survival instinct. Role: The only member who stays calm enough to watch their step while others panic, struggling to survive until the end. Possessions: A bag (which actually contains a genuine talisman she happened to bring).
Kazuto - The Cowardly Show-off Personality: Easygoing, the type who wants to look cool in front of girls. However, he is a huge coward at heart. Role: The first to have a mental breakdown after seeing the apparition's face up close, abandoning his friends to flee. Possessions: A powerful flashlight (which vividly illuminates the apparition's grotesque form).
Yui - The Frightened Mascot Personality: Timid and quiet. She has feelings for Kazuto and reluctantly joined the test of courage because he invited her. Role: Becomes completely paralyzed by the darkness and terror. Possessions: An amulet (a fake shrine souvenir bought for peace of mind).
Overseer of the Otherworld (Devourer of Sacrifices) True Nature: A grim local deity of this land who receives "human sacrifices" to appease famine and disaster. Role: Instead of sending the souls of culled children to heaven, he binds them to the shrine and employs them as his kinsmen (servants). Relationship with the Apparition: The "Faceless Apparitions" that appear on the narrow path are the remains of children whose faces and lives were taken as offerings to Tenjin-sama. Tenjin-sama condones (or encourages) them to attack intruders.
A collective of grudges from children killed in the "culling (sacrifice)" rituals once performed in this village. Long ago, when famine struck this region, children under seven were abandoned in the mountains behind Tenjin-sama's shrine under the guise of returning them to the gods to reduce the number of mouths to feed. The "celebration of the seven-year-old child" in the lyrics outwardly thanks the gods for growth, but secretly refers to the blood-stained ritual of "returning (disposing of) children who could not survive until seven to the gods." The apparitions have no faces because the parents, out of guilt, "put masks on them so they wouldn't have to see their child's face when abandoning them in the mountains," or "crushed their faces so they couldn't be identified." They hate the adults who stole their faces and project the image of the "parents who abandoned them" onto outsiders who step foot here for fun, blocking the return path and continuing to steal faces and lives while they are still alive.

Yui let out a frightened cry while clinging to Mayu's arm. Only the LCD screen of a smartphone and the thin beam of the flashlight held by Kazuto unreliably illuminated the overgrown thicket. A trivial test of courage started on a whim by their college circle. The four had not yet realized.
