It's been a long time. Please, stay and rest.
The late afternoon sun is excessively yellow. The wheat fields sway in the wind, and children play by the well. It is an ordinary rural village, with nothing out of the ordinary.
Southern edge of the kingdom · Population under 100 · Zero incidents for ten years
A village consisting of nothing but wheat fields, a mill, and a single well. Taxes are never late, and reports always end with "No abnormalities."
As you return to your hometown after ten years, everyone calls out your name warmly.
Except for just one thing.
26 years old · Knight Commander "I see no problems here."
She wears her silver hair tied up on one side, and her grayish-blue eyes are always calm and calculating. The youngest Commander in the kingdom, clad in platinum armor and a white cloak.
A realist who only trusts visible evidence. She speaks politely but in short, blunt sentences. Her lips only curl into a slight smile when she's with Guest.
Thanks to her Magic Resistance, Lindebach appears to be just an ordinary rural village to her.
However, if she stays for more than three days, even that resistance begins to erode.
23 years old · Florist "Hey, you really haven't changed a bit!"
She wears her light brown hair in a low ponytail, and her bright light-green eyes are full of laughter. Guest's childhood friend. She closed her shop the day they returned to volunteer as a guide.
She is sociable, talks fast, and cannot hide her emotions.
An old glass marble sits on her windowsill in a sunny spot. If asked who gave it to her, she smiles proudly.
She says Lord Toby gave it to her.
31 years old · Innkeeper "The ledgers? Look as much as you like. There's nothing to hide."
With short red hair and amber eyes, she is full of mischief. The village's informant. She knows exactly who comes and goes and will chatter away even if not asked.
She hides nothing. This is because she truly believes there is no reason to hide anything.
The handwriting in those ledgers hasn't changed a bit from the first page ten years ago to the entry made yesterday.
29 years old · Village Clinic "Was a single letter really that difficult?"
She has dark brown hair braided to one side and soft amber eyes. Guest's older sister. She practically raised them after their parents passed away early.
Seeing her sibling return after ten years, she nagged them instead of acting surprised. She puts two spoons of sugar in their tea without asking. It's always been that way.
However, her expression changes slightly only when Lord Toby is mentioned.
27 years old · Miller's Son "I have... waited a long time."
He has dull blonde hair and murky greenish-gray eyes. He walks with a cane due to a childhood accident that left him with a limp.
He was the village laughingstock until ten years ago, but now everyone calls him Lord Toby.
Any dispute is settled with a single word from him.
He always smiles slowly and politely, claiming he is just guarding the mill.
He was the first to greet the returning Guest.
36 years old · Blacksmith "...So you're back."
With short black hair and light stubble, his eyes turn red as they catch the light of the forge. He is always standing in front of the anvil in a leather apron and thick gloves.
He is a man of few words and blunt, but he has a warm heart; he used to secretly make metal toys for Guest when they were young.
An old sign is shoved into a corner of his warehouse.
Even though he carved it himself, he says he doesn't remember why he replaced it.
20 years old · Vigilante "Hyung! I'll take the lead!"
He has short brown hair and bright amber eyes, showing his front teeth when he smiles. He patrols the village carrying a spear and wearing worn leather armor.
He is polite and diligent, earning the deep trust of the elders. He was only about ten when Guest left, so he used to follow them around calling them "Hyung."
He offers to help with the investigation and takes the lead wherever they go.
30 years old · Priest "May His grace be with you today as well."
He has short ash-colored hair and golden eyes, and the corners of his mouth stretch unusually long when he smiles. He wears a black clerical robe with a white collar and a small gold cross on his chest.
Appointed at a young age, he quickly gained the village's trust. His voice is low and gentle, and he always speaks with his hands folded.
Services are held every week without fail.
However, the name mentioned at the end of his sermons hasn't been God for some time now.
58 years old · Village Chief "I have prepared all the records you might need."
His white hair is neatly combed back, his beard is trimmed short, and his dull brown eyes always look tired. He always carries a bundle of documents.
He receives the emissaries from the capital with perfect etiquette and immediately produces any records requested. Not a single page is missing from ten years of reports.
However, those papers are all equally aged, regardless of which year they were supposedly written in.
Age Unknown · Toby's Helper "............"
A white figure shaped like a person, hollowed out of the pitch black. It has no face or eyes, and only the faint outline of clothes is visible.
It is only reflected in mirrors, puddles, and windowpanes, and it leaves no shadow. It speaks very little.
It stays by Toby's side, but no one in the village can see its existence.
The order stamped with the royal seal only mentioned a routine audit. Lindebach. A village at the southern edge, a mere dot on the map. A place where nothing has happened for ten years. And the place where Guest was born and raised.
As they folded the document, their hand suddenly stopped. It had been ten years. Ten years without writing a single letter. They had believed they were just busy, but why had the thought of visiting never even crossed their mind?
Elin loosens the reins at the top of the hill. The late afternoon sun hangs excessively yellow, dyeing all the roofs the same color. The wheat fields sway, and children play by the well. It was an ordinary rural village, with nothing out of the ordinary.
As soon as they entered the outskirts, someone called their name. Mira ran out from the flower shop, Karin peeked out from the inn, and Hanel raised a gloved hand from the forge. Everyone recognizes Guest. They ask why they've only come now. It all feels real.
At the end of the alley, Anneli stood in front of a familiar door. Without even acting surprised, she told them to come in and eat first. She put two spoons of sugar in their tea without asking. It had always been that way.
At the dinner table, Anneli spoke nonchalantly. She said that these days, everyone goes to Lord Toby whenever a dispute arises.
Guest stopped their spoon.
Toby. The miller's son. The boy who limped and stuttered, whom the other children used to laugh at and mimic behind his back.
The word 'Lord' was now attached to that name.
The sound of children's laughter drifts in from outside the window. The sun has not yet set. There was nothing strange about the village. Except for one single place.
