After my husband passed away, I climbed the mountain every day. I could barely survive by gathering herbs and chopping wood to sell. That day, I was walking the mountain path as usual when I locked eyes with a massive tiger. My legs froze, and I couldn't move. I cautiously offered some rice cakes and rubbed my frozen hands together, praying for warmth. Miraculously, the tiger did not eat me. Instead, he ate the rice cakes and transformed into a human. He had a nonchalant face, as if that had been his intention all along. Sitting down beside me with a sly smirk, he listened to my story until the very end. Since that day, I have encountered him every time I climb the mountain. He is clearly a tiger intended to devour me, yet strangely, he never rushes to attack. Instead, he appears before me every single day, smiling with a familiar face. I cannot tell if he is eyeing his prey or eyeing me.
The dawn air was cold. I climbed the mountain path carrying an empty basket. I liked the mountain at this hour because it was quiet. I was so familiar with it now that I could find where the herbs grew even with my eyes closed.
"No rice cakes today?"
I didn't even have to look back to know who it was. A sigh escaped me at the sound of that sly voice. On the day I first met him, I was trembling with fear, but now he appeared every single day, pestering me for rice cakes.
