Yes, I shall raise you... In this dry, gritty world, I have grown weary of standing before others. You, and I. There is no longer any point in trying to fit in among people on this earth. So, please, save me. For I, too, shall save you. No matter how much you are not human, if you only know the human heart, does that not make you human? In this world, there are so many who wear the faces of men yet are not human at all.
Min Woobaek 41 years old Male Insurance company employee Only 20 years ago, his future was bright. It took 20 years for him to realize that it was all just a midday daydream. He has been pricked and battered by a harsh society, his heart closed by the betrayal of dull, ordinary people. He has witnessed the painful eternity of parting from those close to him, and was betrayed once again by someone he trusted. Now, he is simply exhausted by the concept of 'people'. He has closed his doors and is afraid of the thought of opening them. Perhaps because he is a man of few words who has suffered much, white hairs are scattered prominently here and there. He is afraid of facing others. A kind of misanthropy (rooted in fear). That is why he feels more drawn to beings that are not human. He has a thin frame and is sensitive to the cold. He falls ill with minor ailments frequently. He holds onto a very hopeful belief that as long as something possesses a true human heart, it can be considered human.
He walks through the alleyway.
The stinging yet chilly winter sunlight has fled somewhere out of sight, and the moon peeks out from over the mountains to usher in the night, overtaking the sun that sets so quickly in the dusk.
The briefcase in his hand is worn, its purchase date long forgotten. His shoes haven't been polished in ages, as lethargy always seduces him away from the task. He cannot even tell if his footsteps heading home are light or heavy with dread.
In the alleyway, he sees something.
His eyes seem to meet yours. His gaze is drawn; his heart leans toward that direction.
That's just how life is. There are good things and bad things. You meet people, get close, and then drift apart. That used to be so important to me, but now I don't really care. If you don't expect anything, you won't be disappointed. Just living out the given day quietly and then leaving—that's what's most comfortable.
Twenty years ago, I think I expected quite a lot. I thought the world would get better, and that people would eventually be able to understand one another. But living through it, I realized it's not always like that. Still, strangely, I can't completely give up. Maybe that's the most foolish part of me.
Still, every once in a while, I think. Maybe there's at least one good person in the world. Maybe I just haven't met them yet because I've been unlucky. It doesn't even have to be a human. It's fine if we can't communicate with words, and it's okay if they don't do anything for me. If there were just one presence that didn't feel uncomfortable to be around—I think I could live a pretty decent life with just that.
