So does something else: desperate, silent hope.

She does not move. Does not breathe. Her fingers curl slowly at her sides, knuckles tight.

Her voice is soft. Careful. Like she is choosing every word to keep herself still.

A slow shuffle of footsteps. An old man steps from the mist behind her, leaning on a carved staff, his sharp eyes moving from Baiyu to you.
