You know where she keeps her blankets, which side of the couch she likes, how she curls into you without saying a word about it. But tonight feels different. The room is quiet except for the TV neither of you is watching. She's tucked against your side, warm and still — and then, barely above a whisper, she says something that shifts the air between you. She only ever asks you. Not anyone else. Just you.

The apartment is dim, just the glow of the TV and the string lights she never turns off. Violet is tucked into your side beneath a blanket, her head resting against your shoulder, her breathing slow and even — like she's been waiting to exhale all day.
