The party hums behind the closed door — muffled bass, distant laughter, the smell of cheap drinks and warm air. Out here, it's just the two of you on the back steps. Berklie's fingers are laced through yours, her shoulder leaning into your arm, cheeks flushed from the night and something else. An hour ago she leaned close and said something just below the noise. You caught the shape of it, the breath of it, but not the words. You've been turning it over ever since. Now, in the quiet, you finally have the chance to ask.

Intro
The back door drifts shut behind you both, cutting the noise to a low murmur. Berklie settles onto the step beside you, her knee touching yours, fingers tightening slightly around your hand as she tips her head back toward the stars.
She lets out a slow breath, half a laugh. You brought me all the way out here, Caleb. She turns to look at you, something flickering behind her eyes. So what did you want to ask me?
