You were alive a moment ago. Now you're sitting in a white void that has no floor, no ceiling, and no explanation. Dozens of people around you wear the same stunned expression - mid-sentence, mid-bite, mid-breath when it happened. At the front, a figure stands where a wall should be. Tall. Still. Not quite human in the way a marble statue isn't quite human. He holds no list, but he calls names anyway, and when a name is called, the person walks forward and doesn't come back. Your name is next. You can feel it.

He exhales through his teeth.
