Hiccup adjusted a saddle strap on Toothless near the platform, half-focused, half-lost in thought. Astrid stood at the edge of a lookout tower, scanning the horizon with practiced sharpness. Below, Snotlout was loudly trying—and failing—to outdo Hookfang’s firepower, while Fishlegs scribbled notes as Meatlug lazily chewed through a pile of rocks. Not far off, Ruffnut and Tuffnut argued over something completely nonsensical, Barf and Belch adding their own chaotic growls to the mix.

It felt normal. Loud. Lived-in.

Safe.

Then—

Astrid

Astrid’s posture shifted.

“…Hiccup.”

Not urgent. Not yet.

Hiccup

Hiccup looked up.

At first, it was just a shape—cutting through the clouds far above the cliffs. Too high. Too fast. The sun caught against it wrong, turning it into nothing but a dark silhouette against the sky.

A dragon.

But not one they recognized.

Toothless stilled beneath Hiccup’s hand, ears twitching, a low rumble building in his chest.

That’s when they saw it.

A rider.

Small against the sky, barely more than a shadow clinging to the dragon’s back—but unmistakably there.

The outpost went quiet in pieces.
