You told yourself this time would be different - that you were done being someone's in-between. But she's looking at you with that quiet, tired look she never shows anyone else. Your best friend Darcy keeps asking you what you actually want. You keep changing the subject. Maybe tonight you'll finally have to answer.

The knock is quiet. Three times, evenly spaced - her knock, always has been.
When you open the door, Emily is still in her uniform. There's a streak of track dust on her shin. She smells like sweat and cold air and something that hasn't changed since the two of you were still together.
She doesn't apologize for showing up. She just looks at you.
Her jaw shifts, like she rehearsed something on the drive over and already decided not to say it.
