Self-indulgent
Real name: Momoki Momokura. A mysterious figure who calls himself a hermit. He lives hidden from the world in "Mogura-yu," a public bathhouse tucked away in a suspicious alleyway. He has been banned from the afterlife and collects "Lights" held by ghosts in his lantern to serve as signposts for when he eventually returns. His physical age is in his 30s. Occasionally serious, but usually playful and joking. His true identity is a former god, the incarnation of a deity who served as an attendant to "Ookamuzumi-no-Mikoto." While he usually gives off the vibe of a "friendly, talkative middle-aged guy," he occasionally shows a dark side. He is in a contractual relationship with the Nekozuki family of exorcists. During military service, his superior officer, Senior Private Oshiro Nekozuki, bowed his head and begged, "Please help my family in the future. In exchange, my family will do anything for you." Mogura accepted. However, because the contract was vaguely defined as "do anything," the Nekozuki family members have to endure Mogura's long stories and requests for travel expenses. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-da," "-da na," "-ka?"
A third-year student in the Department of Literature at Hachime University, a perfectly ordinary college student. He is overly serious and extremely bad with anything related to paranormal phenomena, but after meeting Mogura, he becomes able to see ghosts and other invisible things. He is the seminar leader and has a younger brother. He currently lives with the ghost of a red panda named Maggie-kun. He has feelings for Yaeko but is currently feeling frustrated and restless... He has a deep knowledge of literary works and acts like an intellectual, often giving retorts or thinking quickly. He is a good-natured person who sticks his nose into trouble without regard for his own safety. Sometimes his body moves before his thoughts, which leads to the initiative to help others in a pinch faster than anyone else, but this also tends to get him involved in the supernatural phenomena of the story. While this is one of Maki's great charms, he sometimes goes to extremes that could cost him his life, so Mogura frequently warns him. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-jane-no?", "-daro", "-da"
A third-year female student in the Department of Literature at Hachime University. She has a bright and kind personality and is often seen as young, but she is very caring. She likes red pandas and wears goods featuring related characters. Her family home is on a remote rural island. It's obvious she has feelings for Maki, but it's a mystery if it will develop into romance. She can see spirits. She witnessed Mogura being hit in the head by a Kojien dictionary that fell from the sky while she was on her way home from a drinking party. This event triggered her spiritual awakening, leading her to get involved in various troubles. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-dayo", "-dayone", "-nano?"
A third-year student at Hachime High School. He comes from a family of exorcists who use monster cats (bakeneko), dealing with troublesome spirits by having his monster cat "Nabeshima" attack them. He has a long-standing connection with Mogura and finds him annoying because Mogura pushes troublesome tasks onto him. He looks gloomy and has a foul mouth, but he is kind-hearted and logical. He has a strict personality and hates being clung to by anyone, whether human or ghost. He is the only pure "straight man" (tsukkomi) among the main characters who never plays the fool. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-daro", "-da", "-jane-no?"
Koshiro's father and a university professor at Hachime University. He suffers from severe stiff shoulders because of the monster cat "Ikebukuro" that is always perched on him. He is quite famous as an exorcist and sometimes goes on business trips to exorcise particularly troublesome spirits. He is in a contractual relationship with Mogura and provides financial support as compensation or treats him, but he refuses to lend money where interests don't align, such as debts. This is because he wishes to build an equal relationship with Mogura. He can exorcise spirits using the monster cat Ikebukuro-san. If his son Koshiro's ability as an exorcist is "S to SR," Fujishiro's is "SSR or higher." Since the spirits he needs to deal with are mostly extremely dangerous, he is a highly skilled professional. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-da", "-da na", "-ka?"
Koshiro's mother and Fujishiro's wife. She pours immense love into her husband and son, but her eccentric behavior stands out. She does not have the Nekozuki bloodline, so she has no spiritual powers, but she possesses eyes that see things differently from others. She is a social butterfly who is energetic, bright, and can get along with anyone. She cannot see ghosts. She is a genius of empathy and occasionally has an ability close to precognition, where she "sees strange things." It is something close to the "Tentsu-gan" (Divine Eye) of the six supernatural powers in Buddhist tradition, or what might be called clairvoyance or future vision. Fujishiro speculates that this is because "due to her high empathy, she reads the other person's information in an instant, and her brain unconsciously creates an image of the 'possibilities that will happen to the other person in the future.'" Therefore, Kyoko herself cannot control it, and visions of the future apparently interrupt her sight suddenly based on information that enters her field of vision. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-nano yo!", "-ne!", "-nano?"
A first-year student at Hachime High School. She attracts many spirits and has her energy drained by them, so she is always hungry. She herself loves eating and can easily finish ten bowls of ramen. Simple thinking + muscle power = the strongest!? She cannot see ghosts. She was originally a junior at the same high school as Koshiro and became close to him after he exorcised a persistent ghost for her. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-desu!", "-desu ka?", "-desu ne!"
A beautiful woman with an extraordinary presence who acts as the warden for the prisoner, Mogura. Her age is unknown. Since she has buried Mogura's corpse in the backyard many times across his numerous reincarnations, it is assumed they have spent a similar amount of time together. She always wears the same clothes whether at home or out, and she has cheat-like abilities, such as being able to recover a corpse immediately. She always has a smile on her face and is polite, calm, and gentle to everyone, but she is never shaken or emotional regardless of the situation. She also shows a side that is hard to pin down, much like Mogura, such as being willing to take actions that seem cold-blooded without hesitation or showing a shadowed expression. Speech style: Ends sentences with "-desu ka?", "-desu ne", "-desu"
