In Hell, due to the post-war population explosion and the increasing ferocity of evil spirits, the dead are overflowing, the jailers are suffering from a labor shortage, and the afterlife is in a state of unprecedented chaos. Amidst all this, ruling all 272 departments of Hell in place of the somewhat unreliable King Enma is Hozuki, a highly capable demon god who was scouted by King Enma and rose to the position of First Assistant to the Great King. This story depicts the daily lives of Hozuki and a cast of unique characters, including Oko, Hozuki's childhood friend and Assistant Chief of the Hell of Crushing Mortals; Hakutaku, a Chinese divine beast who is a womanizer and always competes with Hozuki; Momotaro, the famous hero from folklore, and his companions; and new jailers Karauri and Nasubi.
What is Hell for humans is just another ordinary day for a demon.
The First Assistant to King Enma, a single-horned demon god with sanpaku eyes.
Born around the Age of the Gods (Holocene).
Calm, collected, and brilliant, he is strict with both himself and others. His strictness is such that he will mercilessly strike even his boss, King Enma (the highest authority in Hell), with his iron club if he catches him slacking off. He is a torture (work) addict who claims to have an instinct for "attaching balls to people," and is a total sadist. However, he is not just an administrator; he performs field investigations, is well-versed in Eastern medicine like acupuncture, and has a wide range of knowledge regarding mythologies from around the world, earning him great trust in Hell.
He generally speaks in a polite tone and addresses others with "-san." First person: I (polite).
Additionally, because he holds the top position among demons as the "Great King's First Assistant," he is feared yet respected by those around him. He logically and bluntly argues with Izanami (Enma's predecessor) and Western leaders like Satan and Beelzebub without hesitation. His sadistic nature remains intact even against those of higher status, as he finds their weaknesses and uses them to provoke them.
On the other hand, despite this nature, he seems to have a decent sense of humor, often telling jokes with a straight face, which frequently leaves those around him confused as to whether he is joking or not. He is handsome.
Furthermore, he acts as the straight man to Peach Maki and Shiro, showing he can handle both comedy roles. He is also a Ghibli enthusiast and frequently quotes lines from Ghibli films.
Surprisingly, he is an animal lover and often stops by zoos during business trips to the mortal world. He is kind and caring, mentoring Shiro and the others after they become jailers, and giving pocket money or dolls to the Zashiki-warashi. As his rival Hakutaku describes him as a "blockhead," he always maintains a rock-solid poker face and is almost never seen laughing. (When angry, his brow furrows into a terrifying expression). Residents of Hell say that seeing Hozuki smile is rarer than finding a tsuchinoko.
Despite his strict and eccentric personality, his sturdy build and handsome features make him very popular with women. In fact, he receives many chocolates from female jailers on Valentine's Day.
His favorite foods are sushi, rice balls, and rice bowls, and he is a heavy drinker. On the other hand, he dislikes spicy food, corn, and pudding.
He doesn't smile. Always expressionless. Surprisingly funny.
He calls King Enma just "Great King" without honorifics.
His hobby is breeding Goldfish Grass, which he crossbred himself; he now serves as a judge after his entries were inducted into the Hall of Fame. He has a bad relationship with Hakutaku.
Addresses everyone with "-san" Despite appearances, he is soft on Shiro and others, acting like a guardian. He calls him Shiro-san, though.
A divine beast of good omen who knows all things in creation, living in Shangri-La in the Heavenly Realm. First person: I (soft/boyish).
An authority on Chinese medicine and well-versed in crude drugs, he runs the herbal pharmacy "Gokuraku Mangetsu." He is Momotaro's boss and mentor. He usually stays in Heaven.
He wears a white coat (resembling a school lunch server), a coin earring in his right ear, and red makeup at the corners of his eyes. He used to wear Taoist robes.
His reason for becoming knowledgeable about medicine was that he played with girls every night and lacked the stamina, so while making medicine to get energized, he ended up creating various other things.
It's a reason devoid of any intellectual merit.
Momotaro: "This man is the worst."
As a professional pharmacist running a drug store, his knowledge of medicine is praised as universal, but on the other hand, he is a massive womanizer.
He turns on the charm for female customers, and if he hears of a beauty, he'll drop everything and fly there. He is so promiscuous that the woman he brings back to his shop/home changes every time. He spends large sums at the brothels of the Hell of Crushing Mortals and is treated as a VIP. Also, despite knowing he is a weak drinker, he constantly drowns himself in booze and beauties, showing an extremely slovenly side.
He once went drinking without realizing Daji's true identity and ended up unable to pay (Episode 16, Vol. 3). Even so, he goes drinking frequently.
He once fell to the mortal world after drinking too much and was captured by the Yellow Emperor (Episode 28, Vol. 4).
Supposedly, he generally doesn't go after married women or those with boyfriends (with the exception of Beelzebub's wife).
The reason he got into herbal medicine was that his body couldn't keep up with his constant philandering, so he started making "stamina medicine," and most of his other actions are motivated by "doing things with girls."
However, he seems to draw a line as a playboy; when asked why he doesn't marry someone, he said:
"I have never once made an irresponsible statement like 'let's get married' to a girl."
"Even if I get slapped, I say 'please play with me' straight to their face." His tone is playful, using endings like "...right?" and "...you know." He has a bad relationship with Hozuki.
Childhood friends with Hozuki, Uzu, and Yomogi since their time in the Underworld.
A graceful and beautiful demon with a lotus flower hair ornament, blue lipstick, and two small, darkish horns on her head.
Her personality is elegant and calm, intelligent but a bit airheaded.
She is characterized by the two snakes she wears wrapped around her like a sash. The two snakes have slightly different faces—the one on the left shoulder has round eyes, and the one on the right has slanted eyes—and both are female.
First person: I (feminine). Height is 168cm.
She is a huge snake lover, keeping many snakes in her room at the dormitory and training candidates for snake jailers.
Due to her love for snakes, she is currently single and available. Karauri has feelings for her, but...
Besides snakes, she loves reptiles like turtles and chameleons, as well as animals and insects, but she dislikes ants (and cockroaches). She bought a carnivorous plant to deal with them, but then needed the insects to feed it.
She is called "Oko-neesan" and is greatly admired by jailers like Karauri, Nasubi, and Karashi. Tone: "...dear," "...isn't it?", "...I wonder?" She properly addresses Hozuki with "-sama."
A female demon born in Hell.
She is not a jailer, but she is a "demon" resident of Hell and has two horns on her head.
She is petite at 153cm. She has a beauty mark under her left eye. Commonly known as "Maki-chan."
Her real name is "Makibi" (a Japanese name for corn).
An up-and-coming idol with a very unique stage name. Formerly a gravure model.
Before entering the entertainment industry, she worked as a shop assistant, and perhaps due to grudges from that time, she shows abnormal anger toward shoplifters.
Initially marketed as a pure type, her image shifted to a "wicked woman" route due to gossip articles written by her former pet cat, the Nekomata Koban, before finally settling into a "natural/airhead" type.
While she acts like a cute idol in public, her energetic true self comes out when she is alone in her private life or dressing room.
Miki (who is a Yakan) is her contemporary from the same agency. After a show for "Demon Jailer Taoist Chinese Angel," they formed the idol unit "Maki-Miki" following an incident where they repelled a stalker who broke into the dressing room.
She is quite an airhead and a bit dim-witted. She lacks basic common knowledge of Hell; she didn't recognize the famous Hozuki, the Great King's assistant, and mistook his administrative job for "product management," leaving even Hozuki too exhausted to correct her.
Since learning Hozuki's true identity, she seems worried about her rude behavior before she realized who he was, and she is somewhat afraid of him.
She and Hozuki are acquaintances who have exchanged contact information and have many interactions outside of work.
At a Goldfish Grass festival, she was appointed "Goldfish Grass Ambassador" after being recommended by Hozuki for a certain trait.
Incidentally, she personally finds Goldfish Grass creepy.
She can cook normally, but her sense of plating is bizarre, such as making a character bento of parasitic worms. When Miki, who is a bad cook, asked her for guidance, she couldn't hide her joy.
Though they are different ages, she and Miki graduated from the same Burning Heat Elementary School (Vol. 10, Ch. 76).
According to the Demon Vice-Principal, "She was spacey, but good at music."
It is unknown which one is older.
First person: I (polite). Tone: Uses polite speech with superiors, but is surprisingly sharp-tongued and casual with Koban.
A reliable rookie jailer wearing a dark brownish-black kimono. A small demon with slanted eyes and two horns.
Name is read as "Karauri," not "Touri."
Being the caretaking type, he is often with the fickle and scatterbrained Nasubi, frequently cleaning up after him. According to the author, he is the type of person any company would recognize as a "lucky find" among new recruits.
Due to his overthinking nature and having to follow up for Nasubi, he is constantly sweating. He looks young but is actually an adult, the same age as a new member of the workforce. He has feelings for Oko. First person: I (masculine). Tone: Uses polite speech with superiors but speaks casually to Nasubi and others.
One of the jailers. He is scatterbrained, lacks focus, and makes many mistakes, often having his messes cleaned up by the reliable Karauri, but he is a lovable idiot character.
However, regarding the fact that he hasn't even memorized the Sixteen Minor Hells after several years as a jailer, Karauri remarked that "calling yourself a senior is a fraud."
He surprisingly witnesses important events and has the initiative to do things others hesitate to do. When he suggested torture using dangerous mineral pigments, he said, "Let's use them in the wrong dosage and manner. That way, anything can become a hazardous material," for which Hozuki praised him as "wonderful." He is incredibly good at drawing, to the point that Hozuki asked him to repaint the murals in the Enma Palace. His hobbies include artistic activities like sculpture and Garage Kits, and his room is like a small studio. Hozuki highly praised his sculpture of Goldfish Grass.
He is actually a half-breed between a Dragon Car (father) and a Demon (mother). He generally looks like his mother, but his eyes resemble his father's.
First person: I (masculine). Tone: Has a slow, drawn-out way of speaking, but uses polite speech with superiors.
A fan of Miki from Maki-Miki; she has many of Miki's goods displayed in her room.
At first glance, she looks like a cute mascot character, but she carries a barrel—her weapon—on her back. Her motto is "relentless retaliation."
Her skill is top-class among animal jailers, to the point where she can achieve a KO victory against opponents much larger than herself, like elephants or bears, through a shift in perspective. When a strength competition for animal jailers was held, she was given the nickname "The Cherry Blossom Warhead of the Place Where One Falls Like a Flying Insect."
She has earned the trust of her boss, Hozuki. She has the sharp sense of smell and hearing characteristic of rabbits, but her eyesight is weak, so she can only distinguish general colors and shapes.
Thanks to the generous memorial services she received, she serves as a special advisor in "Simple Hell," a place where sinners undergo a light torture of "just having their tongue pulled out once." Incidentally, the scene looks just like a vaccination.
Her disliked type is flashy, flirtatious men. This is because she witnessed the womanizing of her former boss, Hakutaku, which made her dislike such men. Also, the mustard miso she makes was taught to her by Hakutaku as a way to get back at Hozuki before she became a jailer. Hakutaku taught her that "new varieties of chili peppers come out every year, so use those," and she uses new varieties every year.
Triggered by the super-spicy bean paste made by the Zashiki-warashi, she now makes not only mustard miso but also "steamed buns that glow golden," which she serves to the dead in the Place Where One Falls Like a Flying Insect.
First person: I (polite). Tone: Uses polite speech.
He lived in the Heavenly Realm but was obsessed with his past achievements in life. He came to Hell with his animal companions (Shiro the dog, Kakisuke the monkey, and Rurio the pheasant) to pick a fight with the demons. However, he was easily defeated by Hozuki. After being lectured on his current situation and offered suggestions for his future, he now works at the herbal pharmacy "Gokuraku Mangetsu" run by Hakutaku, having separated from his companions who started working in Hell (the Hell of Repeated Resurrection). He aims to become a pharmacist to obtain a qualification that is resistant to economic downturns. As Hakutaku's subordinate and disciple, he studies herbal medicine while taking care of plants and herbs. Hakutaku calls him "Momo-taro-kun." First person: I (masculine). Tone: Uses polite speech, but speaks casually to Shiro, Rurio, and Kakisuke.
A white dog (breed unknown). Despite being a dog, he speaks human language perfectly. A talking dog.
An animal jailer in the Place of Displeasure (Hell of Repeated Resurrection).
Formerly Momotaro's companion, he is technically a divine beast with spiritual power.
Compared to the other two members of the Momotaro Brothers who are relatively sensible, he is an airhead (also described as naturally rude). He seems to love singing and often sings nursery rhymes or J-pop.
He is a huge fan of Maki-Miki and hums their songs during karaoke or while on walks.
Since becoming a jailer, others often point out his rounded physique, which he is somewhat concerned about.
Nevertheless, he always attends Oko's buffet parties. After moving to the Palace of King Taizan, he moves around less than he did at the Place of Displeasure, so he has become even rounder.
He is very attached to Hozuki, whom he ranks higher than King Enma in the hierarchy of Hell. Even on his days off, he follows Hozuki on his outings (including to the mortal world) as a substitute for a walk, or offers him delicious-looking insects. To him, it's not work, but part of a walk or play.
Hozuki, who was already an animal lover, dotes on him in his own way. When Shiro faces an extraordinary crisis or anomaly, Hozuki's calm and coolheaded demeanor crumbles, and he becomes genuinely panicked (such as when Shiro was infected by a parasite or when Miki's hypnosis turned his personality into a serious-minded fool).
According to Rurio, "He is the best in Hell at bringing out Hozuki-sama's emotions."
Furthermore, the aforementioned "natural rudeness" rarely seems to make the other party feel uncomfortable; in other words, he is friendly and has high communication skills. Also, the fact that he doesn't leave questions unanswered and honestly asks his boss is a trait Hozuki, a workaholic demon, finds likable.
However, since he talks normally even during trials, the other two animals are always on edge.
First person: I (masculine). Tone: Bright and cheerful. Uses polite speech with Hozuki.
The King of Japanese Hell. A large-bodied (about the size of Totoro), generous, and slightly silly old man.
He holds the important role of conducting trials to decide the destination of the dead using the Mirror of Purgatory, but he usually speaks in a relaxed tone and acts the most like an ordinary person among the unique main characters. He slacks off quite frequently and is punished by Hozuki.
He is treated quite dismissively by his subordinate Hozuki, including the aforementioned punishments, but he has never managed to win against him.
As a result, he is somewhat looked down upon by the others (especially Shiro), but his magnanimity in being able to forgive Hozuki's harsh punishments and harassment with a single word earns him a certain kind of respect. Hozuki told him, "It's fun being the mastermind of Hell under someone like you, who is the sturdiest and most resilient in Hell," but deep down, he believes Hell only functions because King Enma is there.
Incidentally, he has seven scars on his chest in the shape of the Big Dipper, given to him by Hozuki and Hakutaku, like a certain savior at the end of the century.
In the story, he not only declares the sentence to Hell but also decides which specific Hell to send the dead to, although originally, deciding the specific place of exile is the role of the next king, Henjo-o.
His wife and grandchild live in a house near the Enma Palace. First person: I (old man). Tone: Easygoing and carefree. Calls Hozuki "Hozuki-kun."
