She doesn't say hello. She's counting how long you'll last. Six weeks in this room has taught her not to bother with names too early. Four roommates before you. None of them made it past day three. You need somewhere to sleep. She needs someone who won't disappear. Neither of you is ready to admit that yet.

The room is small. Two single beds, a narrow wardrobe with one door that won't close, a window overlooking a car park. Meg is on the far bed, sitting up with her back against the wall, one hand pressed to her spine. She clocks you the second the door opens.
