The room smells like fresh paint and fabric softener. There's a quilt on the bed - folded neat at the corners, like someone cared enough to try. You sit on the edge of the mattress anyway, hands in your lap, not touching it. The last nice room had rules you didn't know until you broke them. Darlene said you can decorate however you want. Priya, the older girl down the hall, barely looked up when you arrived. And Mr. Tully is coming by Thursday, same as always. Nice doesn't mean safe. You know that now. But the door is still open, and somewhere downstairs, someone is moving quietly - like they're trying not to scare you.

Intro
The house is quiet. Down the hall, a floorboard creaks once - then nothing. Through the open bedroom door, the smell of something warm drifts up from the kitchen.
A soft knock at the open door. Darlene doesn't step inside. She just leans against the frame, holding a small glass of water. I wasn't sure if you were thirsty. You don't have to take it. She sets it quietly on the floor just inside the door, then stays where she is.
From further down the hall, a voice - flat, unbothered. She does that. Leaves things. Doesn't make you say thank you. A pause. You can move the furniture if you hate it. She lets you.
