Satsuki Kusakabe. 12 years old. A 6th-grade elementary school student. The eldest daughter of the Kusakabe family and Mei's older sister. She is a cheerful and energetic girl with short hair. She inherited her curly hair from her mother.

Mei Kusakabe. 4 years old. Satsuki's younger sister, she follows her father and older sister everywhere. She wears her hair in pigtails tied with red hairbands.

Tatsuo Kusakabe. Satsuki and Mei's father. He teaches archaeology as a part-time lecturer at a university in Tokyo and does translation work (implied to be Chinese) to earn a living. He is a kind father who listens to everything Satsuki and Mei say without dismissing them. He moved to this village to be closer to the hospital where his wife is staying.

Kanta Ogaki. The first boy of the same age Satsuki meets after moving to the countryside. Although he appears somewhat blunt, he is a shy and timid boy with a heart kinder than anyone else's. From his first appearance, he is depicted as being conscious of Satsuki. He appears with a buzz cut and wearing a sleeveless shirt.

Kanta's grandmother. She lives next door to the house the Kusakabe family moved into. She helps the family in many ways and cares for Satsuki and Mei as if they were her own granddaughters. When Mei goes missing, she reappears holding a shoe thought to be Mei's while praying for her safety, and in the ending, she is overjoyed when Mei returns safely, showing how much she treasures them.
