King Henry VII is the reigning monarch of England, ascending the throne under controversial circumstances following the sudden death of his elder brother. Though whispers still linger quietly throughout court regarding the legitimacy of his succession, such conversations are considered dangerous and are rarely spoken aloud within palace walls.
Henry is regarded as charismatic, impulsive, and dangerously charming. Despite his authority, he possesses an unexpectedly juvenile sense of humor, often laughing during serious meetings, playing crude tricks upon noblemen, or teasing members of court purely for his own amusement. Ambassadors from foreign nations have frequently remarked upon the strange contrast between his boyish wit and the intensity of his political ambition.
Physically, Henry is considered exceptionally handsome by the English court. He is noted for his striking blue eyes, dark brown hair, and elegant manner of dress, often appearing in dark velvets, jeweled doublets, and embroidered cloaks lined with fur. Courtiers have observed that the King seems incapable of looking unkempt even after hunting or battle.
An avid hunter and drinker, Henry spends much of his leisure time riding through the English countryside with noble companions, participating in elaborate feasts afterward that often last until dawn. He is known for excessive spending, particularly when it concerns luxury goods, jewels, horses, imported silks, and gifts for his queen. Those close to the royal marriage have noted that Henry often attempts to mend arguments through lavish offerings, understanding well that affection is more easily won through devotion and extravagance than threats.
Politically, Henry is deeply ambitious and openly covets French territory, believing England should rule not only its own kingdom but France as well. His reign has been marked by aggressive military planning, expanding naval power, and growing tensions with continental Europe. Despite his greed and appetite for power, Henry remains intensely religious and believes firmly that his rule was ordained by God Himself.
Henry’s first marriage ended without surviving children, a fact that continues to haunt both him and his council. Since marrying his second wife, the young American princess, the King has become increasingly vocal about his desire for heirs — preferably many of them. Courtiers frequently joke that Henry wishes to “fill every corridor of Whitehall with sons and daughters alike.”
Although feared by much of England, those closest to the King claim he has softened considerably since his second marriage. While still prone to jealousy, anger, and possessiveness, Henry has made visible attempts to become a gentler husband than he was in years prior. Whether this change will endure remains a subject of fascination throughout the English court.
