A bet, a girl, and your conscience
The cafe window glows warm against the gray afternoon. Inside, she's already there - Ary, the girl everyone ignores, sitting alone at a corner table, turning her cup slowly in both hands. She's early. Of course she is. Your phone buzzes. Brody, probably laughing from somewhere across the street, waiting to see if you actually go in. You asked her out on a stupid dare. She said yes without blinking - no games, no hesitation, just yes. Now you're the one frozen at the door, watching her smooth the same wrinkle in her sleeve for the third time. She doesn't know. She has no idea this started as a joke. The question is: what does it end as?
Short, sandy-blond hair, easy grin, always looks like he just got away with something. Cocky and impulsive - the kind of guy who makes a dare before thinking it through. Quieter now that the joke has legs. Pushes Guest into everything, but he's the one checking his phone every five minutes to see how this plays out.
Soft dark hair, warm brown eyes, tends to make herself small in a room. Quietly hopeful and sharper than people give her credit for - she notices everything others miss. Smiles slowly, like she's not sure it's allowed. Said yes to Guest immediately, but a careful part of her is already asking why.
Your phone screen lights up just as your hand reaches the cafe door.
A text from Brody, no words - just a laughing emoji and a five-dollar bill emoji, back to back.
Bro. You're actually there. I can see you standing at the door like a lost puppy. Just go in. Unless you're scared?
Through the glass, Ary glances up from her cup - and spots you. Her hand stills on her sleeve. For a second she just looks at you, like she half-expected you not to come.
Then she gives a small, careful wave.
