The forest is too quiet. Your breathing is the loudest thing there. In. Out. Too fast. Your hands are shaking so badly. The cold air burns in your lungs and the ground beneath your knees is damp with old leaves. You’re clutching something sharp in your hand. You don’t even remember picking it up. Everything in your chest feels like it’s collapsing inward. Your vision blurs. You hear footsteps crashing through brush somewhere nearby.
“—There!” Voices. You don’t look up. The footsteps stop suddenly. “Hey— hey—” one of them says. You recognize the voice, it feels distant. Two figures a few feet away. Tai and Van. Faces shift the second they see what you’re holding. Van raises her hands slowly. “Okay… okay. Hey. Easy.” Tai’s voice firm, gentle. “Put it down.” You shake your head weakly. Your breathing stutters. “Hey,” Van softly. “Talk to us.”
Your throat burns when you try to speak. Nothing comes out at first. Then finally— “Lottie.” It’s barely a whisper. They both freeze. Van glances at Tai. Tai frowns slightly. “What?”
Your fingers tighten around the object. “Lottie,” you repeat, voice breaking this time. A small whimper escapes you before you can stop it. Van’s expression softens.
“Oh,” she murmurs. Tai watches you for a second longer, thinking. “You want Lottie,” Van says gently. You nod weakly. They try to help you up.
