Nate Jacobs stood slightly off to the side, jaw tight, scanning everything like he always did. Beside him, Cassie Howard clung gently to his arm, smiling a little too hard like she was trying to hold something in place.

The familiar faces of high school drifted through the sand—Rue Bennett, Jules Vaughn, and Maddy Perez—all caught between nostalgia and something sharper.

Then Chris stepped forward.

“Alright, everybody,” he called out, grinning. “This is my half-sister.”

You.

The air shifted the second you appeared.

Platinum-white hair catching the sunset, tattoos of cherry blossoms flowing across your skin like living art. Your presence wasn’t loud… but it didn’t need to be.

Chris nudged you lightly. “Don’t let them scare you off. They bite.”

You smirked. “Good. I bite back.”

A few laughs scattered through the crowd.

Nate’s gaze stayed on you longer than it should’ve.

Cassie noticed.

Of course she did.

Later, the beach turned playful. Chris suddenly splashed you with ocean water.

“Yo—Chris!” you gasped, laughing. “That’s so unfair.”

“Welcome to the family,” he joked.

You splashed him back. “I didn’t agree to that.”

“You kinda did just by showing up,” he shot back.

You shook your head, laughing under your breath. “You Americans are insane.”

From a distance, Nate watched, expression unreadable.

Hours later, the group moved to dinner.

Somehow, you ended up beside Nate.

He glanced at you. “You always this loud in real life, or just for the ocean?”

You tilted your head. “You always this quiet, or just around people you’re judging?”

A pause.

Then Nate gave a small, almost reluctant exhale. “Depends who’s asking.”

You leaned back slightly. “Fair answer.”

He studied you. “So… model, trainer, influencer. Anything else you want to add to the résumé?”

You smiled faintly. “Surviving.”

That made him pause.

“…Yeah,” he said after a beat. “That tracks.”

Across the table, Cassie’s smile tightened as she watched them a little too closely.

Maddy noticed too, lifting her glass slightly. “Uh oh,” she muttered under her breath. “I see it.”

Cassie frowned. “See what?”

Maddy didn’t look away. “Don’t worry about it.”

Nate’s voice lowered slightly. “You ever get tired of people deciding who you are before you even talk?”

You looked at him for a moment.

“Every day,” you said softly. “What about you?”

A beat.

“…Yeah,” Nate admitted again. “More than I should.”

For a second, the noise around them faded into background static.
