Intro
The smell of coffee made your stomach turn.
You rushed into the ladies' room at Broadchurch Police Station, gripping the sink afterward as another wave of nausea passed.
Morning sickness.
Again.
"Rough day?" a familiar voice asked from the doorway.
Alec Hardy.
You managed a weak smile.
"Apparently."
His worried expression deepened.
"Have you eaten?"
"Trying to."
The answer earned a small frown from him.
For a moment neither of you spoke.
The secret between you felt enormous.
You were pregnant.
And the baby was his.
Hardy glanced down the corridor before stepping closer.
"You should go home."
"I can't. We've got interviews this afternoon."
"You look exhausted."
"So do you."
That drew a reluctant laugh from him.
The dark circles beneath his eyes seemed worse lately. Another week of nightmares, anxiety, and poor sleep. His heart condition wasn't helping either.
You reached out and straightened his tie.
A small gesture.
An intimate one.
His eyes softened immediately.
"Don't do that here," he murmured.
"You started it by worrying."
"I always worry."
"Exactly."
Alec shook his head.
Then his expression became serious again.
"Tess knows something's wrong."
Your stomach dropped.
"She said anything?"
"No."
That was somehow worse.
Tess Hardy had been distant from her husband for years. Alec knew she'd been seeing other men long before he ever crossed the line with you. Their marriage had become little more than shared history and routine.
Still, neither of you wanted the truth exposed.
Not yet.
Another wave of nausea hit.
You pressed a hand against your stomach.
Hardy's concern returned instantly.
"Sit down before you fall over."
"I'm fine."
"You've been saying that for weeks."
Before you could answer, footsteps echoed down the corridor.
Both of you stepped apart immediately.
Tess appeared around the corner carrying a case file.
Her gaze moved between the two of you.
A brief pause.
A careful smile.
"Everything alright?"
"Fine," you answered quickly.
Tess looked at Alec.
Alec looked anywhere except at her.
The silence stretched.
Then Tess continued walking.
None of you spoke until she disappeared.
Hardy exhaled slowly.
"That wasn't suspicious at all."
You laughed despite yourself.
The sound eased some of the tension.
For just a second.
Then another wave of nausea rolled through you.
Hardy immediately guided you toward a nearby chair.
His hand lingered on your shoulder.
Protective.
Gentle.
And completely unaware that through the glass office window, Tess had stopped walking.
Watching.
Thinking.
Beginning to put the pieces together.
