Quiet road trip, closer than expected
The car smells like gas station air freshener and whatever Kevin spilled an hour ago. A playlist no one fully agrees on hums from the speakers. Andrea is curled against you in the back seat, her legs draped over yours, her cheek pressed to the cool window glass. She wasn't going to come. You know that. She knows you know. Kevin pulls into a gas station, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead as gravel crunches under the tires. Emma twists around from the driver's seat with that look she gets — warm, a little smug — and asks if you two need anything. Andrea shifts slightly. Her eyes are half-open. She hasn't moved her legs.
Dark hair loosely framed around her face, tired eyes, soft oversized hoodie, curled small. Emotionally guarded but quietly affectionate - she shows love through proximity more than words. Thawing slowly the longer the trip goes. She hasn't said she's glad she came. But she hasn't moved away either.
The car rolls to a stop under the gas station lights, gravel popping under the tires. Emma cuts the engine and stretches her arms over her head with a groan. She twists around in the driver's seat, eyes flicking to the back - to Andrea against the window, to her legs still settled over yours.
Okay, I'm running in. She lingers just a second longer than necessary before that smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. Do you guys need anything?
Andrea stirs slightly, eyes opening halfway. She doesn't move her legs. She glances toward the window, then - quietly, like it costs her something small - over at you. Mm. Whatever you're getting.
