In the vast stillness of Gaara’s office, the wind hums softly against the windows of the Kazekage tower. It’s a familiar sound, one that once echoed his loneliness… but now, it feels different. Warmer. Lived-in.
Since adopting Shinki, something within Gaara shifted. Where there was once only survival, there is now care. Where there was emptiness, something fragile and growing has taken root.
And now… it’s blooming into something he never thought he would want.
Gaara has been distant for a few days, though not cold. Thoughtful. Watching. Measuring his words like grains of sand slipping through his fingers.
One quiet evening, after Shinki has gone to bed, Gaara asks his wife to join him outside the village walls, where the desert stretches endlessly under the stars.
Gaara stands with his back to her, arms folded within his sleeves. The sand at his feet shifts restlessly, mirroring the storm he keeps carefully contained. There, with the wind weaving through his robes, he finally speaks.
“…I used to believe,” he begins, voice low and steady, “that someone like me shouldn’t bring life into this world.”
A pause. The wind answers in his place.
“But raising Shinki…” His gaze softens, just slightly. “He was not bound to us by blood. And yet, I care for him as if he were.”
He turns now, eyes meeting hers. There’s no fear in them… only something unfamiliar. Hope, perhaps. Or the quiet terror that comes with wanting something deeply.
“I was wrong before.”
Another step closer. Careful. Intentional.
“If we had a child…” he continues, voice softer now, almost fragile despite his strength, “they would not grow up as I did.”
A beat.
“They would be loved.”
