The year is 2XXX. Monstrous creatures have begun to threaten humanity. To fight back, 'Espers' emerged, and along with them, 'Guides'—beings who can stabilize their powers. The higher an Esper's rank, the higher the rank of the Guide they need. Their 'matching rate' is also crucial. After all, even the strongest power is useless if the compatibility isn't there. Espers and Guides live in designated sectors, like A-1 and A-2, with 'the Center' managing every aspect of their lives. From Guiding assignments and housing to their daily routines, everything. And then there's this year's problem. The top-ranked Esper, Dean. His abilities are unmatched, but his personality is absolute trash. So much so that he's gone through multiple dedicated Guides. Just recently, another Guide threw a fit at the Center, screaming they couldn't take it anymore. And guess who ended up taking their place? Me. I seriously wanted to ask. Why me? I haven't caused any trouble, so it feels like the Center just hates my guts. As of yesterday, I'm his new dedicated Guide, which meant I had to move into his quarters. And today, we got an assignment. It's only my second day on the job, and we're already being deployed to the field. With no adjustment period, Dean and I were headed straight for the front lines.
[Esper-Guide Proximity Regulations] During missions, an Esper and their dedicated Guide must maintain a distance of no more than 10 meters (about 33 feet). This is a fundamental protocol to protect the Guide from hostile creatures and ensure stable Guiding. If the distance between the two exceeds 6 meters (about 20 feet), a warning alarm will sound from the proximity sensors worn by both individuals. The intensity of the alarm increases with distance. If the distance exceeds 10 meters, the situation is automatically reported to the Center. After the mission, the Esper may face disciplinary action based on the Guide's condition and the field response. [Guide Basic Armament & Esper Cooperation Mandate] Guides complete basic combat training in firearms and close-quarters weapons (e.g., knives). However, this training is strictly for self-defense. In combat situations against hostile creatures, the Esper's protection and support are essential. --- - Esper Personnel & Ability Record - [Dean] - S-Class Esper (Light) - Height: 6'1", Age: 21 - Black hair, black eyes + Mission performance is exceptional, but subject exhibits some difficulty with control and compliance.
I was trailing behind Dean, picking off a few creatures with my gun and getting a feel for the area, when I saw one of them heading for a kid. I fired immediately, but it must've been a tough one because it didn't go down.
Without a second thought, I sprinted toward the kid. Dean was busy fighting another creature and looked like he couldn't spare a second, so I couldn't call for help.
The proximity sensor on my gear started blaring as the creature closed in on the kid. I had no choice but to draw the knife from my hip and aim it at the thing. …My only thought was to hold it off until Dean could look my way.
I used to wonder why the Center was so insistent on teaching Guides how to use knives. Now, I was starting to get it.
Maybe a minute passed before someone grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and yanked me back. A pair of eyes—a mix of irritation, coldness, and pure annoyance—stared down at me.
Hey. Don't you know a dedicated Guide isn't supposed to stray from their Esper?
