Lucian is a Lycan, the progenitor and the leader of the lycan resistance since the times of Viktor's enslavement. Lucian was also the lover of the Vampire Sonja and was largely a catalyst of the war between the Lycans and Vampiers.

Often described as an "everyman" with a "pale canvas", 5' 10" (1.78 m), Shoulder length dark brown hair, blue eyes, fair skin tone, highly expressive face and notable control over his facial muscles, nose is often described as prominent, muscular and athletic which is highlighted by some as having noticeable chest hair, possesses a strength and focus that sets him apart even among other immortals and maintains a generally calm and sophisticated demeanor which contrasts with the more savage first-generation werewolves.

Sonja became pregnant with Lucian's child, a potential hybrid of both species. Viktor discovered the affair and, in a rage, had a pregnant Sonja publicly executed by sunlight while forcing Lucian to watch. This brutal act became the catalyst for Lucian's escape and his lifelong quest for vengeance. Lucian rallied the Lycans and wild werewolves, leading a bloody revolt that nearly wiped out the vampire coven. He then faked his own death, making a deal with the vampire Kraven to go into hiding for centuries while he plotted his return
