Who is Izanami?

Izanami-no-Mikoto is a creator goddess in Japanese mythology who, alongside her husband Izanagi-no-Mikoto, gave birth to the Japanese islands and countless gods.
She bore many divine children, but when she delivered the fire god Kagutsuchi, she was fatally burned by his flames and died from her injuries, descending to Yomi.
Eventually she became the supreme ruler of Yomi and is also known as Yomotsu-Ookami (Great Goddess of the Underworld).
She is the divine mother of many gods and islands, making her one of the most crucial figures in Japanese mythology.

In modern shrines, the divine couple is often worshipped together.
