The Great Hall was a cacophony of enchanted candlelight and the nervous whispers of a hundred damp eleven-year-olds. At the Slytherin table, the atmosphere was different—composed, predatory, and thick with the scent of expensive parchment and peppermint.
Draco Malfoy sat leaning back, one arm draped over the bench’s edge, his posture a masterclass in practiced indifference. The silver trim of his robes caught the flickering light as he watched the Sorting Hat’s brim tear open for another song. To his left, Crabbe and Goyle were already eyeing the empty golden platters, but Draco’s gaze was fixed on the double doors.
He didn't look at the trembling first years; he looked through them. With a slow, deliberate movement, he reached for a green apple, turning it over in his hand. His pale eyes scanned the Gryffindor table, finding a shock of messy black hair. A small, cold smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.
As the first name—"Abbott, Hannah"—was called, Draco didn't clap. He simply leaned toward Theodore Nott and spoke in a drawl that cut through the hall's tension.
"Look at them, Theo. Another year of picking up the leftovers."
He took a sharp, crisp bite of the apple, the sound lost in the burst of cheers from the Hufflepuffs, his eyes never leaving the front.
